The Zolotoj Plyos ensemble was founded in
1994 by Alexander Solovov, Elena Sadina, and Sergei Grachev. While enrolled at
the Saratov State Conservatory, the ensemble visited rural villages throughout
Russia and Eastern Europe to collect and record traditional Russian folk songs
and bell music, which they subsequently began to perform. The group’s
repertoire also includes Gypsy, Jewish and popular Russian music. The
members of Zolotoj Plyos play more than thirty Russian folk instruments
including the bayan, accordions, balalaika, domra, guitar, zhaleika, clarinet,
saxophone, various percussion instruments, and Russian bells. Zolotoj Plyos has performed in venues all
over the world, including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in
Washington, D.C. and the main hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky
Conservatory.
The Bryn Mawr Department of Russian, Russian Language Flagship, and Swarthmore College Russian Section of Modern Languages and Literatures invite you to both a workshop and a performance by Zolotoj Plyos on Thursday, April 4, Goodhart Hall Music Room, Bryn Mawr College. The workshop, which will entail hands-on instruction with Russian folk instruments, starts at 6 pm. The performance will follow at 8 pm.
