The Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center and Center for Visual Culture welcome Susan Talbott, director and CEO of Wadsworth Atheneum at the Museum of Art, for a lecture on 2013 Hepburn Medalist Patti Smith’s photography.

Throughout her 40 year career, the pioneering artist, musician, and poet, Pattie Smith has expressed a singular vision of unfiltered emotion. In this lecture, Talbott, curator of Patti Smith: Camera Solo, discusses symbolic portraiture in Smith’s Polaroids and silver gelatin print photographs.   These totemic and sometimes elegiac images pay homage to people that artist admires by depicting their intimate belongs, tools, even their graves.

Patti Smith will be awarded the 2013 Katharine Hepburn Medal at an upcoming ceremony on February 7.
